Binary vs matrix vs unilevel: choosing the right MLM plan

5 September 20267 min readBy WebPrimsMLM

The plan you choose decides how your team grows, how much you pay out, and how hard your support team has to work. There is no universally best plan — only a plan that fits your product, price point and culture.

Binary: balanced but demanding

A binary plan gives every member exactly two legs. New members spill over into the first available position, so the tree stays balanced. Commission is usually paid on matched pairs, with carry-forward for unmatched volume.

  • Strength: forced balance and a simple story for new joiners.
  • Watch out for: carry-forward liability and daily capping discipline.
  • Best fit: fast recruitment networks with a clear pair bonus.

Matrix: predictable and narrow

A matrix fixes the width — commonly 2×2, 3×3 or 5×5 — and pays level commissions. Spillover makes early positions valuable, and the narrow structure keeps teams dense.

  • Strength: predictable team shape and easy level-wise reporting.
  • Watch out for: members who sponsor heavily but earn little because positions are full.
  • Best fit: product networks with recurring purchases.

Unilevel: simple and recruiting-driven

Unilevel has no width limit. Every personally sponsored member is on level one, and commission is paid level by level to a configured depth. There is no spillover, so the tree reflects real recruiting effort.

  • Strength: simplest to explain, and rewards genuine recruiting.
  • Watch out for: inactive members blocking level commission unless compression is enabled.
  • Best fit: long-term product and subscription networks.

A comparison at a glance

  • Structure: binary = two legs · matrix = fixed width · unilevel = unlimited width.
  • Spillover: binary = yes · matrix = yes · unilevel = no.
  • Commission basis: binary = pairs · matrix = levels · unilevel = levels.
  • Operational risk: binary = carry-forward liability · matrix = position saturation · unilevel = inactive legs.

How to decide

Start with your product. If people repurchase monthly, a matrix or unilevel plan rewards retention. If your growth comes from new activations, a binary plan creates momentum. If you are unsure, a hybrid configuration lets you run two plans side by side and compare real behaviour before committing.

Whatever you choose, model the payout at your expected growth before launch. A plan that pays 8% more than your margin allows is not a growth plan — it is a countdown.
